If youโre looking for a hidden beach with perfect white sand and turquoise waves, Suwehan Beach in Nusa Penida island is just the thing. Itโs one of our favorite places anywhere in Bali.
Thereโs even a cool pointy rock that looks like a Christmas tree (or maybe an elf hat), and the locals recently built some tree houses where you can stay the night near the cliffs.
This travel guide will explain how to get there, and everything you need to know before you go!Where To Stay In Nusa Penida
Suwehan Beach Nusa Penida
The hike down to Suwehan Beach is pretty short and straightforward, but itโs a good workout. You start at the top of a big cliff and walk down lots of uneven rock stairs.
When I first visited Suwehan in 2017, the place was barely known and you had to lower yourself down on a sketchy vertical rope for the last section of the hike. It was pretty crazy.
Then in 2018, a big chunk of the cliff (and path) was damaged in a landslide, apparently due to the big earthquake on Lombok island.
In 2021, we were finally able to come back and do this hike again, and Iโm happy to report that the path has been totally fixed up and itโs better than ever. The hike down only takes about 20 minutes and thereโs steps and railings all the way.
Going back up is still steep and exhausting, but the path is safe and you get to see one of the best beaches in Nusa Penida!
Be sure to check the tide times with your hotel or driver before coming here, because at high tide the beach disappears in the waves and itโs not accessible anymore. Low tide is what you want.
The beach is amazing and it has some similarities to Diamond Beach, with perfect white sand and limestone cliffs, and a tall photogenic rock called the Jineng stone.
But best of all, itโs still a hidden beach. Most tourists donโt know about it, so you may even have it to yourself!
We saw manta rays, sea turtles, monitor lizards, and even a small shipwreck on the beach.
Suwehan Tree House
In 2018, the locals built some tree houses at the top of Suwehan cliff. Thereโs four of these tree houses now, and you can stay the night in them! Book here.
Donโt expect luxury, but thereโs an outside shower/bathroom and a small food shack for ordering meals, and the beds look comfy.
The best part is that you have a stunning view of the ocean and cliffs, and itโs just a short distance from Suwehan Beach!

How To Get To Suwehan Beach
Suwehan Beach is on the southeast side of Nusa Penida island. Itโs accessible by car or scooter, about 1 hour drive from the main docks and accommodation in northern Penida.
Be careful if you go by scooter because the road is rough and may be dangerous in some spots if you donโt take it slow!
