Itโs a contemporary building (1987), but it has all of the classic features that make Chinese cultural objects so cool. Weโve been to Thean Hou Temple a bunch of times over the years, and itโs always fun to explore.
This is an easy spot to visit if you happen to be touring Kuala Lumpur since itโs not far from the famous Petronas Towers and the city center.

Thean Hou Temple โ What To Expect
The temple has 6 tiers, and itโs interesting to walk around all of them.
From the top stories, you can also get some nice views of the surrounding highrises in Kuala Lumpur city. Thean Hou is a short distance from KL center, so itโs very easy to come here on a short detour if youโre already visiting the city.
If you come to Thean Hou at night, the temple is lit up and it stays open pretty late. Better yet, if you come here on the Chinese New Year, the whole temple is decorated with glowing lanterns and puts on a great show.

How To Get To Thean Hou Temple
The Thean Hou Temple is located in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Itโs about a 15 minute drive if youโre starting from the KL city center, or 45 minutes from the KL airport.

Where We Stayed
We stayed at the 2-star Ahyu Hotel in Kuala Lumpur. It was $17 USD per night for a clean double room with cold A/C, TV, private bathroom, and very fast WiFi.
The location is fantastic. You can easily walk to the train station, convenience stores, fast food (McDonald's and KFC), Chinatown, KL Central Market, Merdeka Square, and more. Even the Petronas Towers were a short distance away!
Prices may fluctuate from time to time, so just keep an eye out for a good deal.
